About
The North East Firefighter Challenge
The North East Firefighter Challenge is a competition organised by Firefighters, for Firefighters.
It is a sporting event which will push firefighters to their limits, provides a day of entertainment for spectators, and raises important funds for charities that support emergency services.
The 2025 event will take place at Siren Fest on May 17th 2025
at Ingleby Manor School, Welwyn Road, Thornaby, Yarm TS17 0FA.
Registration on the day of the event will be 9.30am and the races will start at 10.30am prompt.




The Course
The course has been designed to loosely reflect what a firefighter may have to contend with at a house fire where persons have been reported as being in the building. From setting up and getting equipment to/into the house, to searching for and the evacuation of an unconscious casualty to safety.

1. Lay Flat 70mm Hose Drag
IT GETS HEAVIER WITH EVERY STEP.
The competitor will start behind a marked line, at the sound of the starting whistle, competitors must pick up and advance a branch connected to 70mm lay flat delivery hose, consisting of three lengths (which is already connected to a LPP or similar) by dragging the hose up to a maximum of 50m in length. The competitor must drop the branch over a marked line to complete this section.

2. Lay Flat 70mm Hose Make Up
ROLL, LIFT, CARRY, DROP.
Following the hose drag, the competitor will proceed to the hose makeup area where one length of 70mm lay flat delivery hose will be rolled out on the floor, the competitor must roll up the hose and once completed, carry it to the box provided and place it inside. The hose must be placed fully inside the box.

3. Hose Reel Run Out
BRANCH OVER SHOULDER, LEAN IN, DRIVE THE LEGS.
Following the hose make up, the competitor will proceed to the hose reel and run the hose reel out to a 20m marker on the course.

4. Hose Reel Pull Off
TURN AND FACE.
The competitor will then turn and face the hose reel drum and pull off a further 20m of high-pressure hose, which will be clearly marked on the hose.

5. Container carry
FOUR HEAVY FOAM CONTAINERS.
Four foam containers weighing approx 20kg each will be collected from one area and placed in another area approx 10m away, the containers must be placed in the marked area provided and not thrown or slid into the area.

6. Force Entry
FORCIBLE ENTRY, STRIKE IT RIGHT.
Following the container carry, the competitor then proceeds by the marked route to the Forcible Entry Machine. The competitor must have both feet on the platform and using the hammer provided, hit the weight the full distance of the machine to complete this section.

7. Confined Crawl
GET IN, GET OUT.
Following the force Entry machine, competitors will make entry into the 10m, 2 level cage for the confined crawl, navigate to the exit point and safely exit, feet first.

8. First Story Haul
Stair Ascent:
STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE.
The competitor will ascend the stairs. Competitors may climb more than one step at a time on the way up but they must use the external handrail provided at all times within the marked off areas.
Haul Aloft:
THEY’RE HEAVIER THAN THEY LOOK.
Once a competitor has reached the top of the tower, they must haul up 2 lengths of 70mm delivery hose, using a 16mm harken industrial competition line. The hose pack must be hauled over the guard rail provided and then placed into the box provided to complete this section.
Stair Descent:
DONT FORGET, HIT EVERY STEP.
Upon placing the hose in the box, the competitor must then descend the tower to the ground. Whilst descending the stairs the competitor must step on every single step and have one hand on the external handrail within the marked off areas.

9.Ruth Lee Casualty Drag
SQUAT, LIFT, DRAG.
A 70kg Ruth Lee manikin must be dragged from its location to a finish line approx. 50m away. The competition will be completed only when the dummy is completely over the finish line. The time stops when the feet of the dummy cross the line.
Relay Course Breakdown




Rules & Penalties
Must compete in own, approved personal protection equipment.
We reserve the right to change aspects of the competition without notice.
All competitors must finish the course within six minutes
Breathing apparatus is provided & must be worn by all competitors.
The decision of The North East Firefighter Challenge official is always final.
Non compliance with the rules and regulations will always result in disqualification.

A Great Family Day Out!

Siren Fest is an event which is co-ordinated by CPAD Ingleby Barwick Fund The 2025 event will be held at Ingleby Manor School, Welwyn Road, Thornaby, Yarm TS17 0FA on Saturday 17th May 2025.
In addition to the North East Firefighter Challenge there will be other emergency services and lots more great things at the event.
